They hadn’t dived for a week. And then I got the call. We crowded into the cabin around the small screen, like one of those ultrasound pictures fathers carry in their wallets. We followed their dive. Then the lead bull bellowed and they stopped. Coruscated leviathans, suspended infinity. We watched as the bull turned, swam back up to the immature male, and pushed the camera off its back. The sonar blipped. And then nothing. We watched light swim into the camera as it floated to the surface.
