Alice Blake’s first collection Vicarious Seduction is being published by Root Creations (an imprint of Leaf Books) early in 2008. She has been writing poetry for the last ten years. She addresses subjects close to many women’s hearts – the failure of relationships, the joys and struggles of motherhood, but mostly she writes about sex.

Below are the two poems already published by Leaf. ‘Crescent Moons’ was published in the In Love Collection in 2006. ‘Body’ was published in Outbox and Other Poems in 2007.

Crescent Moons

I held your hand in mine,
dimples where knuckles should be,
and cut with curved silver scissors
tiny slivers of fingernail
that fell on the deep blue carpet
to make a sky full
of crescent moons.

After, we put our hands together,
your hand only covered my palm,
you spread your fingers wide
to try and make it grow as big as mine.

Now it has.
Your nails are private.
Our palms no longer kiss.

Body

He knows my body
as a blind man knows a face,
each curve and sweep,
contour and ridge
each part that makes me tremor.

If I were to take my body away,
he could carve
a perfect replica of me
out of air.
