Owen Lowery

Prior to his spinal injury in 1987, Owen Lowery won numerous national judo titles, including the Men’s British Closed in 1986 when seventeen years of age. Two years of hospital food preceded academic study leading to a first class honours degree in Humanities and an MA in Military Studies. Owen is now taking a second MA at Bolton University, this time in Creative Writing. Owen has had a ghost story recorded by the BBC and poems published in Envoi and Carillon. He has also been long-listed for the 2007 Virginia Warbey Prize. Owen’s favourite word is whisky, although cheeselog comes a close second because it reflects his Berkshire origins. He currently lives between Lancashire and Merseyside, but hopes not to lose his accent in the mêlée of football, horse-racing, hillsides, local history and rootsy music.

looking for a man to make you whole.
Here are a hundred of them, perfectly formed.
These men will never let you down,
or give you a load of grief.
They’ll stay around.
Time and tide wait for no man.
So take one, quick.
They’ll love you like no other can.

Shore’ by Kathy Miles.

steamers that you could ever hope to encounter.
The Leaf Books team was aided in the judging of this
competition by the poet Sheenagh Pugh.

Ukraine and Other Poems -

there is an old soviet train
running through communities
of communist orchards
and the family planters
remain towns away
bussing each day
to plough and tow
the potato
the seed….
