Robert Wilton

Robert Wilton is a mild-mannered bureaucrat by day and a writer by night. His short stories have won a range of prizes and been variously published and performed; the award-winning In No-Man’s Land is available through Leaf Books. He is the author of two radio plays, and a first novel, the Elizabethan detective thriller Secret Mischiefs, was published on the web. He has also published articles and reviews on Balkan history and culture. He currently lives in Pristina with his partner, the poet Elizabeth Gowing, while working as Advisor to the Prime Minister of Kosovo.

by Robert Wilton

Winner of the Leaf Winter Short Story Competition 2006

‘And I, who ran towards his guns screaming like a retarded child, and then lay shivering and bleeding and clotting in a muddy pool under his barbed wire, who am I to speak of foolishness?’

50 years after the First World War, a group of veterans returns to the trenches where they fought each other. Some have come to remember, some to forget. But neither process turns out to be as straightforward as they expected, as a series of revelations challenges their memories and values. The importance – and perhaps the impossibility – of the attempt to come to terms with our own past is exposed in this unpredictable and moving story.

A bookish boy’s learning to experience his city as a blind man would experience it; a fabled and helplessly destructive dragon that lives at the local takeaway and a biker’s encounter with a Harley-fancying mermaid. The Light That Remains and Other Stories contains the winning entries from the Leaf Books Open Short Story Competition that ran during the winter of 2006. The fourteen superlative stories residing within represent the pick of crop.

The Dogstar and Other Stories contains the ten winning entries from the Leaf Books Science Fiction and Fantasy Competition. They cover subjects as diverse and imaginative as a lone astronaut’s desperate universe-wide search for another sentient being, a tailor’s affair with the mystical Lady who comes to heal his plague-ridden town and a man who says sorry and starts to fly. A more fantastical collection of stories you could never hope to encounter, not even in an infinite series of parallel universes. The competition was judged by the Leaf Team.

In 2007, Leaf Books ran a Spoof and Humour Competition. In 2008, we tunnelled our way out of the mound of entries, blinking mole-ishly and very much tickled about the ribs. We were clutching some horoscopes and comical diaries and political satires and product reviews, and useful information on how tell if someone fancies you via the medium of quantum physics.
The Someday Supplement contains the fourteen winning entries from that very competition, with additional material by the Leaf Team.
